Inspiration:

This painting is from a series celebrating spring, inspired by the fresh feel of stems, leaves, and blooms emerging from the earth.

During the long winters in Seattle, one of my least favorite months in March. The days are getting longer but it’s still rainy and in the 50’s. Sometimes it seems like spring will never arrive! But then the clouds part, the sun comes out, and I get my gardening gloves on. Plunging my hands into the earth, weeding, observing the peonies emerging. April come she will, just like the Simon & Garfunkel song.

I was driving along on a beautiful early spring day when “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers came on the radio — you know that feeling when a song perfectly matches your mood?

The sun was streaming through the windows, everything outside was starting to wake up and turn green, and I felt centered, peaceful, and optimistic. I took that energy back to the studio and this painting came into being.

I discovered my love for gardening in my late 20’s when I left my corporate job in NYC and moved to rural Western North Carolina to study textile design. After working for years in an office, all I wanted was to be outside, so I got a job as the assistant to the horticulturalist for the small town I lived in. Thus my education on all things gardening and my love for growing things began.

I still love getting into the garden and watching the progress of the blooms in our yard and around the neighborhood in the springtime. This painting reminds me of a zoomed in view (perhaps from the perspective of a bee or a hummingbird) of a pale petal unfurling, surrounded by lush greenery.

In the early spring, my garden often feels barren. The hydrangeas and other deciduous perennials are pruned down to sticks and nubs. The only colors evident are the deep green of evergreen leaves and the pale pinks and creams of the winter-blooming hellebores.

But there are signs life — peony buds and other plants shooting up, reaching for the sun. This painting captures the essence of that soft, raw feeling of early spring, ripe with possibility and hope.
